Block 2 Test Friday

Math:  Warm-up, Lesson 10 notes on adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  The method in the math book in the blue box is a "suggested" method.  If students follow these steps they won't ever have to "borrow" or "rename" when subtracting with fractions.  I want them to use this specific method somewhere on their homework.

Fractions on Friday?!

Math:  Warm-up, corrected and collected.  Homework  stamped,partner checked, and collected.  Lesson 9 grid book notes. In class assignment adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators.  Students were assigned partners and worked together.

Science:  Team building, positive classroom climate activity; "People Search".

Homework:  All caught up?  Enjoy the weekend.  Next week, Measurement Lab and Block 2 Test.

Open House BBQ Thursday Night 6:30

Math:  Warm-up (7th grade), Lesson 8 Notes.  These notes in this picture are awesome!  Estimating Fraction addition and subtraction.  We found out what that wavy equal sign was about on the pretest.

Math tests returned

Math:  warm-up, Block 2 pretest,  Block 1 tests and pretests returned.  We discussed the grading and how retakes will be available soon.  I keep all tests in my files to share at parent teacher conferences. 
Notice the improvement on Jupiter Grades though!  We spent 8 days on Block 1 and saw tremendous growth. 

Science: none

Block 1 Test Tomorrow

Math:  Warm-up, Quick review of mixed and improper fractions (Lesson 6), Block 1 Review evens assigned.  Students were given 30 minutes of class time to work on these 33 problems.

 Science:  Who Studies What?  Scientists have incredible titles!  We used our word attack skills to try to figure out.... ornithologist?  microeconomist?  cryogenist? botanist?

Homework:  Prepare for Block 1 Test tomorrow.  Review your grid book, the lessons in the book, and use the odd answers for the review to be sure you know your stuff.

Customary Measurements with rulers

Math:  Seventh grade warm-up, correct, collect.  Correct, collect homework from Lesson 5.  Good job showing work and common denominators.  The math book has nice clear examples students can follow if they get stuck on a problem.  Also, the odd answers are in the back to help them check along the way. 

Sci/Math:  Measuring with customary measurements.  We did an in class assignment measuring to the nearest quarter/ sixteenth of an inch.  We had to simplify and round these fractions as well. 

Homework:  No new homework, so if you are all caught up.... enjoy the rainy weekend! : )

Science:  Preview science text, worked on blue worksheet "know your text".

What is the Scientific Method?

Math:  Warm-up, partner check homework, correct hw, collect hw.  Lesson 3 notes:  multiples and simplifying fractions.

Science:  How do scientists work? Scientific Method notes, short movie on scientific method.

Homework:  Math page 15 (2-30) evens, display your thinking.  Tell a family member about the scientific method.  Jacob and Ryan's teams got to leave early because they could tell me something about the scientific method.

Jupiter Grade codes sent home

Math:  Warm-up, corrected and collected homework, collected warm-ups.   Pictures taken in gym.

Science:  Passed out Jupiter grade codes and answered lots of questions about grades and jupiter grades.  Prepped for golf ball scientific process lab.  Vocab:  data, controlled experiment, variable, and hypothesis

Homework: Students should get parent signature in planner confirming that jupiter grade code letter was handed to parent.

Other:  On Monday, all students will participate in an assembly hosted by the railroad regarding safety. Next Friday is early release.  Open House is September 26th.

First Math homework assigned!

Math:  Warm-up, Lesson 1 notes, Homework time.

Science:  We shared our scientist pictures in partners and showed some off under the document camera. Collected papers. 

Homework:  Any late scientist pictures need to be finished by tomorrow and turned in to my basket.
Math homework Lesson 1 (2-8, 14-26)  Evens only.  Students must display their thinking (show work)

What is Science?

Math: Dear Mrs. Stolp letters collected;  Warm-up, Pretest for Book 1 Block 1, set up math grid books table of contents and pages.
Learning Target * What do I already know about Block 1?

Science:  Scientific Process notes started.  We discussed (in several partner pairs) "What is Science?".  We watched the Brain Pop video on the Scientific Method and discovered that we had some good ideas about what science is.

Draw a scientist

Math:  Easy C B M Testing, warm-up.  No homework.

Science:  Draw a scientist and write five sentences about him, her or it.  Use the slip of paper handed out in class to guide your drawing and writing. 

Homework:  Due Wednesday:  Dear Mrs. Stolp letter (at least one page).  Due Thursday:  Draw a scientist.

Tomorrow:  Math Block 1 pretest and the scientific method lesson.

Easy Cbm

Math:  Warm-up, testing in the computer lab for Easy CBM Math Fall 6.  Not all of the computers were working, but we have plenty of time.  Every student will get to test. Continuing tomorrow.

Science:  We worked on names.  One student can already name everyone in A109!  Students began working on a letter to me,  "Dear Mrs. Stolp" is due Wednesday.  It must be one full page or more! 

Homework:  Dear Mrs. Stolp due Wednesday.

Students are doing a great job participating, listening, keeping track of supplies, and being on time.  Hooray!

Parent Letter

Dear Agnes Stewart Middle School Family:

Welcome to sixth grade! I have already been so pleased with your students’ attitudes and behaviors. I hope they will take advantage of all of the positive opportunities at ASMS.

Students are expected to help build community in the classroom by supporting their classmates, respecting each other, and respecting my right to teach.  The relationship between school and family is important to your student’s success!  Please keep me informed.  You may email; check our classroom blog; or call me and leave a message on school days. I teach from 10:15-1:30.  I welcome emails from families!  Don’t be shy!

As your student prepares for upper grades and high school it is so important to be self-managing.  Self-managers become “Trail Masters” at Agnes Stewart!  Trail Masters use good social skills, study skills, and positive behavior. Ask your student about Trail Masters, Honor Roll, and Paw Prints. 

Study Skills
The best tool to help your student to become independent with study skills is the planner.  Inside this planner is your student’s daily schedule. Check your student’s planner daily and look in his/her binder.  Students must write down assignments, check them off when completed, and circle ones that were not completed on time and still must be finished.
